Commitment to Diversity
At Nordic News, we understand that diversity is not just a buzzword, but an essential element of journalism. As a publication, we strive to represent the voices and perspectives of our diverse student body. Our mission statement reflects this commitment to diversity.
"As a staff, our mission is to provide our readers with interesting stories that are relevant to the Inglemoor community. We are dedicated to improving our craft, promoting journalistic values and exploring change through our online and print publication.
We hope you can join us anytime, anywhere. You will see that there’s a story here for you."
In order to ensure that our commitment to diversity is reflected in all aspects of our publication, I have taken several steps this year.
-
We have actively sought out and recruited a diverse staff of writers and editors who bring unique perspectives and experiences to our newsroom.Under this we also ensure that topics touching a specific population is written by a journalist representing them. For example, for our February 2023 web cycle, we are writing a opinion piece on Mindy Kaling and her effects on the image brown women. We have made sure that we had a journalist affected by and passionate about the topic work on this article.
-
This year, my fellow Co-Editor-in-Chief and I made the executive decision of implementing pronouns into our articles. As I state in our note in our first issue, although it is not AP style, we think it is significant part of identity that must be shared. This is what we wrote in that note:
"In an attempt to acknowledge all aspects of people’s identities, we have decided to include the pronouns of those mentioned in our articles. In the event someone uses two different pronouns, such as she/they, we will use one pronoun for one paragraph, then alternate each paragraph thereafter. We hope that through this change in style, we are able to represent the Viking Community properly."
-
We also make sure to cover a wide range of topics and issues that affect our student body, including stories about race, gender, sexuality, and socio-economic status.
-
In addition, we strive to make sure that our reporting is inclusive and respectful of all individuals and communities. We avoid stereotypes and harmful language in our reporting, and make sure to give equal weight to all sides of a story. We also actively seek out and amplify the voices of underrepresented groups, such as students of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community. In order to do this, we even started a google sheet to record who we have already interviewed. Our policy this year is that in order to get a grasp of the entire community we try to not interview someone more than two times.

Overall, our commitment to diversity is not just a goal, but a core value that informs everything we do at Nordic News. I believe that by amplifying diverse voices and perspectives, we can better serve our readers and create a more just and equitable society.
